An increasing number of American men are facing issues of substance abuse, unemployment, and suicidal tendencies. Within this context, mental illness takes a variety of forms, from eating and mood disorders to elevated anxiety. Unfortunately, natural manifestations of masculine character have been hampered in recent decades by educational and cultural influence. In addition, the transmission of positive masculine traits between fathers and sons has been hampered by a rise in single-parent households. At the same time, men have suffered professional and cultural dislocation through broad trends spanning tech innovations and federal regulations.
This means that the necessity for self-exploration and a reclaiming of masculine identity has never been greater. Such a process starts with self-reflection and introspection, with a focus on learning to listen to and trust one’s inner voice. Rather than simply bottling up feelings and thoughts, consider them constructively and find ways to express them so as to confront life challenges with confidence and foresight.
As Mr. Dietz describes it, time spent working through experiences, thoughts, and feelings are never a waste of time, but rather a down payment on future happiness, both in one’s own life and the lives of those surrounding.
